i can't get no satisfaction

Watched the movie 'Sucker Punch' on Saturday with my little sis. After the movie was over and I was walking out of the movie theatre, shielding my bright eyes from the glare of the sunlight, I couldn't help but be mildly disappointed with the movie. I didn't love/hate it. I enjoyed the fantastical action scenes and I though the characters weren't horribly over-acted. I felt that the ending was a bit anti-climatic. I guess I was expecting a little bit more out of the movie, after watching the trailers.

However, you can be sure that come Halloween, there will be a LOT of Sucker Punch girls roaming the streets.

main street

Lined along Main Street are shops stuffed full of vintage and antique wares, consignment stores with racks crammed full of amazingly ridiculous clothes to play dress up in and restaurants that consists of nothing more than a hole a in the wall, but manage to create mouth-watering dishes that have the locals coming back for more. Must come back when the weather is better to fully explore all the shops that we missed.

Trying on this outrageous coat at the Bohemian Gallery. Lots of giggling while playing dress up in here. It's like rummaging around in your mom's closet. If your mom was a 70's disco-loving diva. Or a drag queen on Broadway.
I don't think it's a good idea to be drawing so much attention to *that* area of the body, especially on prom night. I mean, people will naturally assume things...
This could possibly be the best toy store in Vancity.
Beatrix Potter tea set! How cute is this?!
I found this to be slightly unsettling. I mean, edible modelling dough? Really?!
SQUEE! The kid in me wants this badly!
Smurfs! I loved watching the cartoons... although I did always wonder why there was only one Smurfette in the whole village.
Where's Lassie?
Awww, the ponies are in lurve!!!
Putting the smack-down on the other lizards.
The side dish that comes along to seasoning your pho: Bean sprouts, lime, basil leaves and a red chili. Sometimes they serve it with lemon, but either one is fine with me.
Shrimp salad roll served with peanut sauce. I forgot how good this is, must have it more often.
Beef ball pho for me. Nothing like a steaming hot bowl of pho on a cold, rainy day. The broth was so good and not too much MSG as I wasn't dying of thirst after dinner.
Steamed crepes filled with minced pork, mushrooms and onions and served with peanut sauce. Perfect bite-sized morsels of goodness.

aid for japan

In a constant state of shock and awe as images of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake, tsunami and aftershock from March 11, 2011 continue to flash across the television screen. Now, with mounting fear of a possible nuclear meltdown, it is even more heart-wrenching, especially after reading this article. It's unbelievable and my heart and thoughts go out to the people of Japan. Please donate to the Red Cross and other charities. Click here for a list. Every bit counts.

better late than never

Found out that one of my photos got published on Vancouver Is Awesome for their Crowdsourced Sunday blog post. Check it out here. It's a great site showcasing what Vancouver has to offer and I'm happy that they liked my photo enough to publish it. Thanks VIA!

something old, something new

A little birdie on Twitter told me that True Value Vintage Clothing was having a sale on Converse shoes along with their incredibly moving sale (Winter coats for $30! Skirts for $15!) Great deals all around. I don't know what I was expecting to find at the sale, but I nearly shrieked with glee when I saw these leather (!) Converse shoes. I've been coveting a pair of leather Converse shoes, ever since my brother got a pair of leather Converse high-tops. And now I have a pair and they were on sale!

Marked down from $79 to $39, how could I say no?!
A very pretty silk scarf to dress up my work blazers.

True Value Vintage Clothing will be moving to their new home on Main Street at the end of July, so there's plenty of time to head downtown and peruse through the racks. But, I suggest you head down early, 'cause there might not be a lot left when July comes around!

food coma

It's been a long time since I last had all-you-can-eat sushi. Now I remember why.

California roll, kappa roll, chopped scallop roll and house roll.
Salmon and tuna nigiri sushi. So yummy!
Ebi sunomono. The noodles were kind of stale and the cucumber hadn't soaked up the flavour of the vinegar. Not a fan.
Deep fried shrimp balls, scallops and garlic butter corn that was cooked in a LOT of butter. Not really something that you would find at a sushi place...
Seafood motoyaki. I'm not a fan of this dish since I don't like the mayonnaise-based sauce on top.
BBQ short rib. SO. GOOD.

zero tolerance

I'm surprised that other people were surprised by the news of John Galliano getting fired from Dior after making anti-Semitic remarks. Yes, he is a massively talented haute couture designer, a creative genius who has resurrected the Dior name and a superstar in the fashion industry, but that does not give him the right to make racial slurs. Granted, he was clearly inebriated out of his mind in the video, but someone, whether it be his handler, manager, agent, assistant or chauffeur should have kept watch over him and stopped those girls from filming the whole fiasco on camera. The truly sad thing is Hitler would not have been so kind towards John Galliano, if he had lived during the Holocaust.

In the end, it's a sad parting of what was a wonderful partnership between the House of Dior and John Galliano. I hope he finds the help he needs.
